BroadCom Fines Raajje TV For MVR 500,000

Opposition-aligned RajjeTV has been fined MVR 500,000 by the media regulator, Broadcasting Commission after Member of Parliament Mohamed for Thimarafushi constituency, Mohamed Mustafa called out for President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom to be pushed out of office on-air, during one of its shows.

During a show on RajjeTV on July 28 2017, Mustafa called out for the people to go out on the streets to push President Yameen out of office and urged the people to unlawfully overthrow the government of the Maldives.

Officials from the Broadcasting Commission of the Maldives disclosed that Raajje TV was given prior notice and multiple chances to answer to the defamatory content but failed to do so. Raajje TV, however, denied that they were given such a chance.

Broadcasting commission’s statement declared that Raajje TV has failed to comply with several rules under the broadcasting rules and regulations. The statement notifies three key points of defamation. The investigation of the matter showed that two out of the three key points in Mustafa’s speech was broadcasted after alterations later on.

Mustafa is currently under investigation by the Maldives Police Service for the comments and defamation against the President of the Maldives.
