Ungoofaaru MP Jaufar Dawood, on behalf of the ruling Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM), has submitted a bill to the People’s Majlis, proposing to and create a Media Commission instead of Maldives Media Council (MMC) and Maldives Broadcasting Commission (BroadCom).
Under this bill, BroadCom and MMC will be dissolved to form the media commission. PPM submitted the bill on Sunday after various controversies and debate over the overlapping of authority and function of the two institutions.
The Attorney General’s Office has discussed the bill with some of the relevant institutions before submitting it to the parliament. This bill came into effect after the significant efforts made by the government in creating a more effective mechanism to monitor the media and its contents.
The draft of the bill read that the Media Commission will have five commissioners, appointed to the position by People’s Majlis and the local media.
The bill on formation of a media commission has been scheduled on 24th October 2017.
