President Abdulla Yaamin Abdul Gayoom and First Lady Fathimath Ibrahim inaugurated the housing project ‘Hiyaa’ in Hulhumalé. Hiyaa project aims at building more than 10000 housing units in 36 towers at the reclaimed land in Hulhumale in order to solve the housing issues faced by Maldivians. It is the biggest housing development project initiated by the Maldivian government to date.
While addressing the ceremony President Yaamin said that under this project 62 towers of 14 storeys each will be built and people will start in them by next year. He said that even though this project aims to provide housing for 80,000 people, it will actually provide housing for 100,000 by the end of the project.
“This is the city of hopes”
he said indicating that Hulhumale’ will become a city of wonders, especially for the youth after its developmental stage is completed.
Hiyaa will be developed with the help of Government offices, state companies as well as some private companies too.
