President Yameen will be potentially signing the free trade agreement upon his upcoming visit to China.
Last Monday, The President’s Office released a statement announcing that the President and the First Lady will be making an official trip to China upon the invitation of the President of China, His Excellency Xi Jinping. The trip is scheduled to take place on 6th December 2017.
The president’s office has reported that ‘high-level discussions with top government officials and stakeholders of China will take place during the visit, and a number of agreements on bilateral cooperation will be signed’.
According to China’s media sources quoting an official note by the Chinese government, President Xi Jinping would hold high-level discussions with his Maldivian counterpart where the free trade agreement would be signed. This has however not been confirmed by the Maldivian government yet.
The parliament has signed off on the China’s Free Trade Agreement last week causing some outrage with the opposition. However, the government assures that the agreement would greatly benefit the Maldivian economy and boost the fisheries and agricultural sector as the primary beneficiary.
