China Backs Maldives on the FTA Issue

During the Regular Press Conference of China’s Foreign Ministry, Spokesperson Geng Shuang, said that the trip by President Abdulla Yameen has strengthened the relations between the two countries and it will benefit the citizens of both countries.

‘The signing of the China-Maldives free trade agreement is an important consensus reached by the leaders of the two countries and conforms to the trend of economic globalization. This is not only conducive to the sustainable development of China-Maldives economic and trade relations, but also to the improvement of the trade and investment liberalization and facilitation of this region.’ Geng Shuang said.

In the Chinese daily tabloid newspaper Global Times, it was stated that, ‘The Maldives is not the only South Asian country with a strong desire to improve economic ties with China. Looking closely at those countries, one can see that their economic and trade structures and those of China have a certain complementarity.’

Maldives’ Presidential couple’s state trip to China involved signing a number of agreements on bilateral cooperation between both countries and high-level discussions with top government officials and stakeholders of China.
