Maldives Co-sponsors the Jerusalem Resolution Despite Trump’s Warning

Maldives has cosponsored the resolution submitted to the United Nations General Assembly disapproving the decision of United States to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.

The decision to cosponsor the resolution submitted by some of the Arabic countries was announced by Maldivian ambassador to US and ambassador and permanent representative of Maldives to UN, Ali Naseer Mohamed.

Mr. Naseer has tweeted that, ‘Jerusalem will take center stage at UNGA today ‪Maldives‬ co-sponsored Resolution declaring null & void any action to alter status of the Holy City.

He also stated that, ‘Maldives will deliver a statement at the Session reiterating its position that East Jerusalem as the Capital of Palestine’.

The US has threatened to cut off funding to any country which votes in favor of the resolution.

At a Cabinet meeting in Washington US President Donald Trump has warned countries against voting by saying, ‘All these nations, they take our money and then vote against us. They take hundreds of millions of dollars, even billions of dollars and then they vote against us. We’re watching those votes. Let them vote against us.”

If the resolution passes, Trump has to retract his declaration on Jerusalem as Israel’s capital and stop moving the US embassy there as well.

US has vetoed the resolution, however, unlike the Security Council, General Assembly resolutions are generally non-binding on member states, but it carries political weight, and are legally binding towards the operations of the General Assembly
