The President of Maldives, Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayyoom has disclosed that the State of Emergency was absolutely necessary in order to resolve the current turmoil in the Maldives.
President Yameen, while addressing the nation at a press conference held in the President’s office just a while ago, the president has disclosed that he has tried absolutely every option left for negotiation with the supreme court in order to resolve the matter and that the State of Emergency was a desperate measure he had to take as a result of repeated refusal from the Supreme Court of Maldives.
He Specified that the Attorney General and the Prosecutor General, on behalf of the Maldivian government has tried in every way possible to consult the Chief Justice and the Supreme Court as the state has major obstacles in implementing the Supreme Court Ruling.
The President Further stressed that the Supreme Court ruling having terminated the authority of the Judicial Service Commission (JSC) in investigating or inquiring the basis of the Supreme Court Ruling was strictly against the law and that it is indeed a sign that the ruling was not lawfully produced. He highlighted that it is his duty and responsibility as the head of state to determine what is safe and act in the best interest of the whole community.
The efforts made to overthrow the Government of Maldives by the Impeachment of the President by the Supreme Court was also unlawful. He said that he strongly condemns the opposition requesting another country to intervene in the internal affairs of the Maldives and that no such attempt would be allowed.
The President also assured that the State of Emergency will not affect any daily functions of the government or the daily lives of the Maldivians. The President affirmed that there is absolutely no danger or insecurities to any citizen of the Maldives or any foreigners who reside in the Maldives and that the security forces of the Maldives will guarantee the safety of all individuals.
