Former President of the Maldives, Maumoon Abdul Gayoom along with two supreme court justices were sentenced to 19 months in prison by the Criminal Court of the Maldives this Wednesday.
Chief Justice, Abdulla Saeed and the Supreme Court Judge, Ali Hameed Mohamed and Former president Maumoon were sentenced after all three were found guilty of obstruction of justice.
The charge of obstruction was levied on them for refusing to hand over their phones after their arrest on the 5th of February. A Policeman who testified against the three said that all three of them insisted that they did not have one on them at the time. He further said that the phones of Judge Ali Hameed and the Chief Justice were not found during the search of the Supreme Court after their arrest.
Maumoon and the judges have several more charges awaiting trial including terrorism.
